French midfielder suffers further setback

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Abou Diaby faces weeks on the sidelines after suffering a fresh injury blow in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at Wigan Athletic on Wednesday.

The Frenchman has endured a frustrating campaign with injuries, making just nine appearances for the first team so far, and only returned from nine weeks out with an ankle injury as a substitute against Chelsea on Monday night. Restored to the starting XI at the DW Stadium, the midfielder limped off with a calf injury to leave Arsenal fans fearing the worst.

And on Thursday Wenger confirmed to Arsenal’s official website that Diaby, born in a suburb of Paris, will be out for at least a few weeks.

“It is a calf strain," Wenger noted.

"He is out for a while now. Some weeks I think."

Diaby’s career has been considerably blighted by injuries since his move from French side Auxerre to North London in 2005. He was out of action for nine months between 2006 and 2007 after suffering a horrific broken leg against Sunderlan,d and also missed part of last season after picking up an injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
